Description

ROTOЯ is a two-year programme of exhibitions, public events and talks at Huddersfield Art Gallery featuring the transdisciplinary work of art and design staff from the University of Huddersfield. ROTOЯ showcases a community of artists, designers and curators whose ideas and connective practices migrate and span artistic production, techno-design research, craft and cultural studies. ROTOЯ is located at the pivot between art and design disciplines and society, where points of intersection and engagement are considered and debated from multiple perspectives. The programme signals a unique partnership between Huddersfield Art Gallery and the University of Huddersfield to present a broad spectrum of practices and dialogues. Each exhibition features a number of public events in the form of artist/designer and curator talks, student ambassador tours, reading groups and film screenings. Author

Steve Swindells is a Professor in Creative Practice; he is also Director of Research and Director of Graduate Education; he is currently managing the School’s submission for the REF2014. Over the last twenty years Swindells has exhibited his work, individually and collaboratively, across Europe, Asia and North America.

Dr Catriona McAra is Research Fellow in Cultural Theory in the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield. She submitted her AHRC funded doctoral thesis, entitled ‘“Some Parallels in Words and Pictures”: Dorothea Tanning and Visual Intertextuality’, in the History of Art at the University of Glasgow where she also worked as a teaching assistant (2009-11). In 2011 she was a visiting lecturer at the Forum for Critical Inquiry, Glasgow School of Art, supervising a variety of final year undergraduate dissertation projects. Catriona holds a first class honours degree (2007) and masters with distinction (2008) both in History of Art at the University of Glasgow, and PG Certificates in Academic Teaching Practice and Research Supervision. She has been invited to chair research forums and has presented papers on topics such as epistemophilia, femmes-enfants and the motif of the child, in works by Leonora Carrington, Lewis Carroll, Angela Carter, Joseph Cornell and Dorothea Tanning, at a number of national and international venues including Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Universität Leipzig, Université d'Angers, and Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco.
