One of the students whose work was published in our 9th edition of Fields was Nadim Rana Afzal from the school of Arts and Humanities.
We asked Nadim to tell us a bit more about the research below and you can read the full article here:
"This article is an exploration of architecture and design through J.R.R Tolkien’s Middle Earth, answering questions regarding character traits and expressions of races. Some of the most secretive among Tolkien’s cast are the Dwarves, the focal group establishing great architectural feats with little traces about much of their identity beyond their material goods – the article seeks to uncover the character of the Dwarves through their architecture within the two great Dwarven cities of Moria and Erebor. The analyses develop upon the limited understanding provided on the Dwarves, with new insight unveiled into the Dwarven societies directly through the design thinking embedded within the architecture of the cities that were once inhabited. Furthermore, a more complex appreciation for the distinctiveness among the Dwarves is understood when contrasting both the city of Moria, and Erebor, further learning new intricacies on Dwarven customs and tradition."
